Caleb and I have been going through the growing pains phase of our relationship, the part where you get deported from la-la land for being too happy, and are forced to confront the smoldering ashes of real life. Or something equally reminiscent of the scene in the 3rd season of True Blood when Sookie Stackhouse refuses to eat a fairy apple, or some shit, and ends up destroying their fairy fantasy world, revealing something that is reminiscent of the burned landscape in The Land Before Time.
Only our world is in Brooklyn, and our deportation is less traumatic, more of a soap bubble popping than a demon losing its shit. It’s not that we’re not still in love, it’s just that we’ve been confronted with some difficult realities—Caleb is moving, which is stressful for anyone, and I ran out of my medication for two days—that have tested our commitment to one another.
We’ve passed the test, but we’ve learned some new things about each other on the way.
