A Brie Grows in Brooklyn

"Mabel's not crazy... she's unusual."

I love this essay on “Royal Bodies” by Hilary Mantel in the London Review of Books:
“I used to think that the interesting issue was whether we should have a monarchy or not. But now I think that question is rather like, should we have pandas or not? Our current royal family doesn’t have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment. But aren’t they interesting? Aren’t they nice to look at? Some people find them endearing; some pity them for their precarious situation; everybody stares at them, and however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it’s still a cage.”
I wish I were Hilary Mantel so badly.

Sarah and Diana

I don’t know what got me on the topic, but I’ve just spent an hour reading about the relationship between Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, mother of Eugenie and Sophie, one time saw by my father at a bar in midtown, former Duchess of York.

There’s a lot of juice there, but what really drew me in was the pictures of them together.

Because they look so happy, like they’re soccer moms watching their kids play a game, rather than royalty bored out of their minds.

Princess Diana vs. Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton and Prince William released their engagement photographs last week, taken by Mario Testino (can you see my face right now? It’s green with envy).

I’m not gonna lie. Kate Middleton looks very pretty. But does she look prettier than Princess Di in her own engagement photo?

It depends on whether or not you prefer feathered bangs.

More than anything, I’m just happy that Prince William and Kate Middleton look so in love. A real life fairy tale. For serious.
