I loved talking to Gilbert & George about their new exhibition, “London Pictures,” currently open at Sonnabend and both Lehmann Maupin locations. Along with answering questions, they asked me many themselves, especially on the topic of handbags.
From an unpublished part of the transcript…
Gilbert: We are not converters to handbags.
George: I would like to know the average number that a lady has?
Me: At least 10.
George: Who invented the whole idea?
Me: I think it was probably when women started working?
George: No! it was a joke in the 1970s, because the queen had one, and Margarat Thatcher. But now, they’re so fashionable! They’re like jewelry!
Gilbert: But where do you put them all?
Me: Some women use their kitchens to store their accessories.
Gilbert: Oh yes, cooking is out!
