A Brie Grows in Brooklyn

"Mabel's not crazy... she's unusual."

Photographer of the Week: Umrao Singh Sher-Gil
A Sikh aristocrat, and a scholar of Sanskrit, Umrao married a Hungarian woman named Marie Antoinette Gottesmann, who was Jewish, and an opera singer.
Marie Antoinette bore Amrita (depicted in the photograph above), who is sometimes referred to as the “Frida Kahlo of India,” and Indira, who was the mother of Vivan Sundaram, a well-known contemporary artist.
(I’m kind of obsessed with this family.)
